Pain & The Healing Powers of Time

Going over past blog posts I came across a post from last year that allowed me to reflect on the healing powers of time and my personal journey over the last 12 months.

I am naturally a rather private person. Extending myself from my comfort zone I feel is necessary, particularly if I can use my experiences to connect with others and support them through similar challenges. This post is an extension and reflection of  The next Chapter and New Self Discoveries which I put together initially after a traumatic chapter of my life to share what was helping me move forward and reach out to those who may be feeling alone in similar circumstances.

Time is a powerful concept. We contemplate not having enough time, then we are thrown in situations where we feel we want to fast forward time to feel better and escape. The beauty of time when healing is that every minute is so necessary to our personal journeys. Days, weeks and months of pain are all part of the healing process and help us learn and become stronger individuals. Pain can be beautiful as much as it can be harsh and terrifying.

I’m not going to sugar coat the concept of healing. Your not going to wake up one day and it will all suddenly be over and all better. Pain digs deep and depending on the situation it will probably be a part of you for a very long time. This doesn’t mean you need to feel sad for a very long time but it does mean you need to accept and befriend it rather than run away and cover it up- it will only continue to visit you and prevent you from moving forward.

That hole torn apart inside of you that can’t be filled no matter what you try- it will heal, but slowly. You can cover it up but like a band-aid it’s only temporary and will start to peel. No matter what the circumstance, no one deserves to live in pain and unhappiness. Initial stages of feeling the pain and accepting it are critical. It is then up to you to nurture and slowly fill that hole. Firstly with self-love, secondly with acceptance and processing and thirdly by taking steps to move forward and let go.

12 months ago I was in a situation I had to get out of ASAP! I had to leave my home, my business behind, my best friend and the person I loved, along with the next 5 years of life plans. Living in absolute anxiety and denial for months before that point in time I was a numb physical and emotional mess held together by fear. The first 2 weeks after were a blur that I remember very little of. All I remember was this incredible pain as reality started to kick in and I was able to let my barriers down.  My mind was this terrifying place replaying images and words and creating endless questions I didn’t understand or could not answer. I couldn’t cope with being in it and would try anything that would help me feel better ‘now’. I would find myself triggered by the tiniest things and falling instantly apart in the supermarket, while walking somewhere, as soon as I left after meeting with a friend … but only while I was alone. With the previous months of practice I had managed to stay together in front of others, so this became a coping mechanism ‘don’t allow yourself to be alone and you will be ok’ I told myself and forced myself to believe. While being around lots of loving family and friends definitely helped, there came a point where I had to self-heal and start to befriend the pain rather than escape it. This was the hardest aspect. Really accepting that this last few weeks was now going to be my reality and I needed to start thinking forward was really scary. It took time, however I was then able to accept that it was also exciting. I had almost this new life that I could shape in any direction I pleased. I refused to allow my life to be governed by my last chapters and month by month I started to heal.

12 months later I can say I am a strong, independent and incredibly happy individual. I can honestly say I am in love with who I am, being in my own company and the new life I have created for myself based around beautiful & positive people, a fulfilling and rewarding fresh start to my business, a new level of health I have been able to build, and a number of self achievements and hobbies that fill me with so much happiness. I wake up in the mornings so grateful and almost in disbelief that this is my life. I can say though that it took A LOT of work to get to this point and I know I still have a lot more work to reach a point of completely letting go of certain beliefs that are still holding me back. I’ve accepted its going to take years, however I also know I want to live the fullest life I can and will not allow my past to prevent me from an optimally happy future. Some weeks are harder than others and some days I find myself sinking back into negative thought patterns, however being able to recognise this and just accept is a positive step towards your healing process. Pain can’t disappear instantly. It heals with patience.

For anyone struggling with pain or holding onto past pain, know that you are not alone and with acceptance, patience and by befriending it, the hole will heal and you will become a stronger individual because of it. Pain is part of life, however suffering is a choice. Keep your heart soft and don’t be scared of allowing pain to touch it again because this will only limit your ability to receive the unbelievable amount of love and happiness this world has to offer you.

I just had to introduce you to this beautiful soul, healthy foodie, yogi and dear friend of mine. I met Candi along my travels over 3 years ago now in South East Asia and have continued to keep in contact online and even managed to meet up in Bali earlier this year as a delightful unexpected coincidence.

This girls kind heart, free spirit, strength and bravery inspire me as I have watched her grow, adventure and follow her dreams. She posses a beautiful energy and I believe we can all take something from her outlook on life.

I also have found many on my clients and myself included  find shutting down at night rather challenging, so was excited to have Miss Candi share with us a few simple yoga poses we can incorporate into our night time routine to rejuvenate, relieve stress and tension and release toxins out of the body.

A few of your favourite things:

There’s so many! I love going on barefoot adventures and exploring new land, spending time in the sunshine and ocean, visiting markets for fresh local produce and funky knick-knacks, inspiring conversations with beautiful friends, and of course… yoga!


What does happiness mean to you?

Happiness to me is a way of life. There will always be high moments, and more difficult challenges. As a whole though, happiness is that overwhelming sense of contentment, a beautiful bliss found when life’s ups and downs balance out. It’s is a peaceful mind, a present body, and a smiling heart.


What does your morning routine look like?

“Start your day in a positive way” I believe the morning is an opportunity to set the flow for the entire day. I try to maintain a morning meditation and yoga practice most days, always listening and allowing my body to move however it needs. If the sun’s out I’ll be in the ocean, there’s nothing quite like a morning dip to refresh the soul. Then it’ a green tea with lemon and a big bowl of muesli and fruit to energize, and I’m ready for whatever the day may bring!


Your most life changing adventure?

I recently returned from 3 months of travel around Asia. It was a beautiful, challenging, solo exploration guided purely by intuition. I visited yoga studios wherever possible, tasted amazing foods and discovered some incredible places on the coastlines of Indonesia, the jungles of Sri Lanka, and the islands of the Maldives and Thailand. In the challenging moments, I often found myself having to surrender and trust that the universe will look after me. There’s something quite beautiful about not knowing where you are or where you’ll be tomorrow. The people, the experiences and the places made this adventure completely life changing in the most positive way.


Any exciting plans ahead? 

My next exciting venture forward is focused around a vision that has been building for some time. Combining all the elements of a healthy holistic lifestyle and sharing with people my love of delicious healthy foods and yoga. At the moment my concentration is on creating great connections and developing the skills necessary to bring this vision to life… watch this space!

This quote resonates with me because of it’s simplicity and utter truth. Opportunities will present themselves every day, being able to identify and embrace them is the key to moving forward toward your passions.


Shutting down at the end of the day can often be challenging. Can you share with us a few simple yoga poses to help us wind down at night?

Viparita karani, otherwise known as legs up the wall.
This is a beautiful restorative posture to practice in the evening. It rejuvenates the body by allowing fresh blood and oxygen to flow from the legs toward the heart. Place an eye pillow on, perhaps with the hands on the belly and simply allow the body to feel the weight of gravity.

With a bolster or large pillow, support the inside of the body in this beautiful hip opener. After a long day, its possible to hold a lot of tension and emotion in the hips, so being able to breathe into this supportive posture can be helpful for a comfortable sleep. In Yin styles of yoga the pose can be held anywhere up to 7 minutes. Remember to give yourself plenty of support and try to forget about flexibility.

Laying twist
There’s nothing quite like a spinal twist in the evening. Simply lay on the back, arms extended at shoulder height with the knees bent, and allow the legs to fall to one side. Cross the top leg over for a slightly more intense release and allow the spine to release with the breath. This posture is a wonderful way of releasing any excess toxins and maintaining a healthy spine.

Create Every Day

Everyday is a blank canvas waiting to be painted on

and we hold the paintbrush to create the picture we desire.

From the moment you wake up you are faced with the option to bring a positive attitude to your day or allow daily stress or circumstances to shadow the potential of what could have been a vibrant, beautiful day.

We can either choose to appreciate and hold value on all the little things, painting their details in our heart and souls or we can rush past them and only absorb a tiny snapshot of the magic and happiness our day could hold for us.

You may run out of inspiration- reach out to those around you. Seeking support is not a sign of weakness but rather strength and remember we can do anything but not everything in this life time.

The colours you were after may not have turned out as expected- roll with it, add a bit more of this and a bit more of that and create the next best thing or make this obstacle into something even better than planned.

You may even run out of paint- bring out the lippy with confidence and a radiant smile and print lips all over your canvas, knowing you have the inner strength to own your own happiness and life path.

I endeavour to paint my daily canvas with bright vibrant colours, focusing on the things that make me happy and bring value to my daily existence. This doesn’t mean I ignore complications or not so wonderful things that arise, I just choose to not bring focus to them. Somedays will naturally have a bit more gray than blue and that is OK.  These are the days for reflection and to inspire bigger and more beautiful master pieces for the days to come.

Feel empowered to create every day with the feelings, memories and small steps leading to the happy life you deserve to own.


 Running BareVitality

Each foot springs off the ground, bringing life to my entire body, powered purely by where your mind lies that day. As a fly through the air I feel powerful, strong and unstoppable.  My stresses get lost behind me, my energy of gratitude and happiness towards my life becomes of heightened focus, my mind creates masterpieces of inspiration and while this is all happening funny enough I get lost in a world of peacful stillness.

For me the simple humanistic movement of running creating an over whelming sense of happiness, love, clarity and personal strength and freedom. This is my relationship with running and this is why I am full blown, obsessively, deeply in love with it.

Yes now I can understand this may sound completely uncomprehendable to many of you, however let me share how I have made running into a life transforming wellness practice and how you can get on board and absorb its magic.

I always enjoyed running however the motivation to run and compete was originaly linked to a negative self belief, needing to meet the expectations of myself and those around me. You can see how this cycle can drown an expression of human vitality and why so many people hold negative beliefs towards running particuarly when the media is pushing it as a picture of weight loss, illustrating you must be feeling pain to experience any gain. Ahh this makes me so sad!  With alteria motives & negative thoughts driving & powering our bodies while we run, it’s no wonder so many people have this attitude towards running.  I now run purely for my own wellbeing and happiness and have just recently started competing again (a slow process with my health) and loving every cold early morning, mentally challenging, limit balancing part of it.

For me running has become addictive and I find myself dreaming about it while I’m driving, feeling the need to start running every time I hear a good song, being excited heading out before the sun has woken and with the cold air sending sharp pulses through my body. Shopping for new runners becomes as exciting as buying a new car and my bed side table has become over taken by running magazines and journals as I find myself wanting to learn more and more, feeding this wonderful relationship. It’s a relationship where the more challenging it becomes, the more exciting and rewarded you feel. It’s an equal relationship where by providing love and energy into your body through running, in turn you are gifted with a whole mind, body, soul happiness equal to what you put into it.

It is also a unique relationship. My bond towards running will be different to everyone else’s. We each take what we require and/ or value out of the experience in our own individual way.

So here is the foundations of my relationship with running:

A form of stress management.

A meditative practice.

A spiritual experience connecting with nature and the environment around me.

A social outlet.

A form of expressing who I am and what I am made of.

An escape.

An space for inspiration and problem solving.

A tool of my physical rehabilitation.

An encourager of personal growth.

A dose of whole hearted happiness for the soul.

In life there will be many obstacles and it is our choice to decide what our reaction will be and the attitude we project that determines our own happiness and life path.

I decided to post this as a result of recently reaching a very low point in my life and watching many people close to me struggle to find their feet when also coming across their own obstacles. I hope by sharing what has allowed me to now feel more positive and excited for an unknown chapter which lies ahead, you will be able to take something that may help you from this when life isn’t being so kind.

Recently going through a rather unpleasant break up, I learnt so much about myself and was surprised by the obvious need to make positive changes for my own health and happiness. It took time but I realised I needed to embrace the feelings of hurt, confusion, anger and pain and to just accept and understand why this experience needed to happen and therefore allow me to be where I am supposed to be.

I’ve been focusing on pouring love into myself and celebrating who I am. Each of us are so amazing in all our individuality, so tell yourself at least twice a day why you are amazing and feel proud about it. Let go of the negative notions that others may have projected onto you and accept that this is just part of their own insecurities.

Surrounding myself with loving friends and family has also been significantly helpful. Whether it allows you to get everything off your chest or to just enjoy the company of people who love and care about you. Being around the innocence of children can also play a magical role in healing the heart.

Do new things. I took up yoga and started to get back into small amounts of running which I always loved, but be careful to treat your body gently when going through large amounts of stress or emotional changes. I also plan to learn to sew and can’t wait to get creative and play around with beautiful fabrics.

I made it a priority to reduce my work load for a while so I have more time to focus on things that make me happy and allow my body to adjust to the many changes.  Read, enjoy the outdoors, meditate, cook, go out with friends, get a massage, enjoy delicious ‘healthy’ desserts, dance, sing, draw, paint, watch a good movie, have a relaxing bath, fill your body with wholesome foods (your body will be happy), spend time near the ocean…… The list could go on forever but really just slow down and enjoy the little things in life.

While you will still have challenging moments/days, its important to be able to accept that this is normal and all part of the natural greiving process. Sometimes you may feel like your going backwards. Thats ok, remember to keep hold of your  positive attitude as this is only temporary and you DO have the ability to create your own happiness.

Most importantly tell yourself you ARE safe, and feel excited for the unknown path because life is leading you towards the greater.

Monday Mindset

Our attitude on a Monday make a large impact on our health choices for that week.

Let’s start this week with positive energy and a focus on dedicating this week to looking after our bodies through fitness and movement, ‘me time’ and  noutritional nourishment.

This week lets focus on filling our plates with plenty of greens and make sure your including good fats and omegas (coconut oil, chia seeds, wild fish, flaxseed, eggs, nuts, seeds) to help repair your body from stress and/or other damage and provide you with a healthy glow. Eat everything in its most natural form, staying clear from processed foods and added sugars.

Take at least 15 minutes out of each day for ‘me’ time. Meditate, read a book/magazine, go for a calming walk, write in a diary, paint/draw, enjoy a cup of tea, practice yoga etc. Anything that helps you relax by yourself and has nothing to do with work/study.

To make it easier starting this weeks fitness routine, I am providing you with a set of exercises to include in your day, everyday this week. You don’t have to do them all at once. You may like to do half in the morning and half at night, or break them up through out the day eg.  as soon as you wake up,  while brushing your teeth, watching tv, waiting for the jug to boil, while cooking dinner etc. Start today and notice how your bodies energy lifts and you start to feel confident, toned, lighter and happier!

50 squats

30 push ups

60 crunches

30 obliques twists (each side)

30 triceps dips  (use edge of a step, couch, chair)

30 lunges (each leg)

20 burpees

Up the numbers if you have more time or finding it too easy.

Remember our health is our greatest possession in life. Without it we would not be able to move, love, eat, think, explore, discover or live. Nurture your body and in return it will provide you with an abundance of health, vitality and happiness.
