This summer has been HOT and whilst it is a fun few months of swimming, adventuring outdoors, going for walks and weekend brunching in the sun…there are many impacts of the suns harmful rays upon our body. So we’ve created a Beauty Summer Proof Guide to help you to find ways to enjoy summer and the sun with your body in mind!

Beauty Summer Proof Guide

Skin

  • Use lighter product on your skin to prevent you skin from getting clogged up, making sure it is non-comedogenic. A natural BB Cream is a great switch from foundation
  • Find a lightweight moisturiser that also doubles up as a sunscreen with SPF 30+
  • Don’t stop moisturising as this protects your skin from pollutants and harsh weather changes- it acts as a barrier
  • Exfoliate twice a week to remove dead skin cells- especially if you have oily skin
  • Unlike winter, where we tend to love hot baths and long showers, in summer, cutting down on time in the shower/bath reduces the chance of irritation to the skin and even summertime eczema. Not to mention so much better for the environment
  • Hydration is key when it comes to healthy skin, especially in summer when sunburn is a high risk. Aim for around 2-3L a day which is approximately 8 cups.
  • Using face masks to replenish the skin and rehydrate- try one of these ‘5 Fun Face Mask Recipes’ out for an at home alternative
  • If your after that summer tan, instead of roasting your skin try one of these Fake Tans to keep that summer glow going all year round without all the skin damage

Eyes

  • Wear sunglasses with complete UV protection. Ultraviolet radiation comes from the sun and is often reflected off surfaces such as sand and water. It is important to check the UV index for the day and even when it is cloudy, wearing sunglasses with complete UV protection helps prevent more serious side effects of prolonged sun exposure
  • Wearing  a hat
  • Using eye drops for hydration
  • Using an under-eye serum
  • Eating foods high in Vitamin C, Vitamin E and zinc to help prevent disease later on in life- why not try out this Papaya Bowl which is high in Vitamin C

Hair

  • Using hair masks, serums and damage proof treatments- check out this post on Hair Care From Your Kitchen Cupboard
  • Leave in conditioner especially if out in the sun, find one with SPF
  • Protect hair with a lightweight hat
  • Rinse hair with tap water before you swim in chlorinated water to avoid your hair turning a greenish colour
  • Keratin treatments can help revive and rehydrate hair that has been damaged from the sun and swimming
  • Wash your hair less to reduce the excess production of oil. On the days when you aren’t washing you could rinse it with cold water to help seal the moisture
  • Keep hydrated with water

So there you have it, a Beauty Summer Proof Guide to keep your body healthy and happy during the heat!

“Hemp” is one of the varieties of the cannabis plant species. The important difference to know between marijuana and hemp is that marijuana contains more tetrahydrocannabinol, which is responsible for the psychoactive properties. Hemp is naturally very low in THC and has been used for thousands of years as a food and medicine source. Below are some of the great uses of hemp for health & beauty. Today, this wonderful plant has come back into the spotlight are is currently trending for its many benefits, used both internal and externally.

Hemp For Health & Beauty!

To Repair The Body

25% of the seed contains protein which makes it a wonderful source of plant-based protein for your health. Our whole body needs proteins to function. Therefore, it’s important to make sure our meals provide enough protein to keep up with the constant repair of bones, blood, cartilage, muscles & cells in our body.

To Maintain Healthy Skin

Hemp contains a lot of amino acids, fatty acids & vitamins. Essential fatty acids like omega-3 and -6 reduce dryness and give the skin an elastic appearance. Amino acids, on the other hand, supports your skin to generate collagen and elastin, helping the skin to stay hydrated and prevent wrinkles. Our skin needs vitamins such as A and E and minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc + magnesium to support our cells. Hemp is full of these antioxidants which makes it perfect for the job!

Pain Relief For The Body

Components found in hemp that work well with the body’s own cells + anti-inflammatory properties together reduce pain. Joints respond well to the internal and external use of hemp seeds and oil. Using hemp for your body can be useful in promoting an anodyne effect.

Help To Manage Stress

Hemp contains Magnesium and B vitamins which can help the body to manage the effects of stress. This happens by impacting important neurotransmitters. If pain or other health conditions are causing anxiety, using hemp seeds or oil may help to lower stress levels.

Eases Hormonal Symptoms

When hormones are unbalanced in our body, we can have sleep problems, acne, memory fog, headaches, fatigue, hair loss, mood swings, weight gain, dry skin + more. Hemp has the omega fatty acids (omega-3 & -6) needed for optimal health, so it helps to balance hormones in the body and prevents these symptoms.

Keeping The Gut Balanced

Hemp is rich in fibre which is essential for our digestive system. Unprocessed/whole hemp seeds are a perfect source of fibre, including insoluble and soluble fibres. These help with constipation, nourish the healthy bacteria in our gut and decreased the risk of digestive disease.

How To Use Hemp

Internal

  • Easy way to use hemp seeds is to sprinkle them onto breakfast cereals, smoothies, yoghurts, fruit bowls and salads.
  • Consuming hemp seeds with plenty of water helps the seeds to swell up and soothes the gut.
  • Add hemp protein powder into smoothies for extra fibre, antioxidants, minerals and unsaturated fats. You can also drizzle hemp oil over your salads.
  • Hemps seeds are perfect for healthy treats. So, set aside time to make this delicious Hemp & Macadamia Cookie Recipe
  • Hemp Seed Oil supplements are also available on the market.

External

  • As a beauty treatment, you can apply hemp seed oil directly onto your skin at least once a day.
  • Hemp beauty products can be found in lots of different forms -face oils, bath salts, lotions, creams, shampoos + more.
  • Hemp seed oil makes a soothing and gently massage oil by rubbing it directly into the muscles.
  • Use organic hemp seed oil with essential oils as a blend into your body or diluting the oils for aromatherapy.

Most of us have it – cellulite! Cellulite is fat deposits just beneath the skin. Therefore, it can be seen lumpy on the lower body such as thighs, hips, buttocks but also on the stomach. The reason why we have cellulite varies a lot. It can appear on our body as a result of age, hormones, genetic reasons, poor diet and lifestyle choices. Unfortunately, some get more cellulite than others, still, it is possible to reduce cellulite and create a smoother appearance of your skin! Cellulite isn’t harmful and is actually REALLY NORMAL, however  it can affect our confidence, especially when spending time at the beach or wearing particular clothes. Here are some of our tips to reduce the appearance of cellulite and more importantly some beautiful practices to include in your ‘self care’ routine:

Ways To Reduce Cellulite:

Movement

When we exercise and sweat, we also remove toxins through the skin. This is great for blood circulation and reducing cellulite. Try high-intensity exercises such as running, skipping, HIIT training, boxing.. etc and also low-intensity exercises such as yoga or walking are highly effective. The more you move, the more you increase your circulative system and body temperature. This helps transport nutrients to required places and soften fats to be metabolised and eliminated by higher body temperature.

Nutrition

Look after your lymphatic system by nourish your body and providing a clean healthy diet.  The best way to reduce cellulite is eating high fibre foods and lots of cleansing greens. Avoid unhealthy processed foods, excess salt and instead eat more fresh vegetables & fruits. Keep it simple and fresh! Juicing is a great method to get fresh nutrients straight to the blood stream!

Hydration

Water is essential to reducing and preventing cellulite. Drink lots of pure, filtered water to keep toxins flushing through the body. Water should be your number one drink. You can try adding lemon juice or fruit slices for flavour. Drink at least 2 liters of water a day and avoid too much coffee, sugary beverages and alcohol.

Swap salt

Instead of using refined table salt on your food, swap to Himalayan crystal salt. Refined salt is highly dehydrating and basically invites cellulite to your body. Himalayan salt is packed full of beneficial minerals.

Removing toxins out of the skin

Stimulate the lymphatic system through dry body brushing, infrared sauna and body scrub. Skin brushing can target areas of cellulite and help to eliminate toxins out of the body. Using a dry body brush for a few minutes, a few times per week will help to reduce cellulite and get smoother skin. You can try using a coffee scrub to massage your problem areas. The caffeine in the coffee has a tightening & cellulite reducing effect. Infrared saunas makes fat deposits soft at high temperatures + a wonderful reason to sit in stillness for 20 minutes. These are also all great ways to promote blood flow.

The appearance of glowing healthy skin

Body oils and moisturisers make your skin glow and appear healthy. Moisturised skin always looks better than dry skin. Natural options such as coconut oil works really well as a moisturiser. A layer of tan always helps to hide cellulite and make your skin appear healthy and smooth. Nowadays there are lots of natural fake tans to choose from!

If you have not tried pre -detoxing this is also a great way to nourish your body!

Sometimes it’s tricky to find makeup products that are both natural and work well. Its a bit of a process of trial and error!  The importance of natural makeup is huge when it comes to our skin. What we apply to our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream and for that reason, it’s better to use natural skincare whenever we can. By using products that contain chemicals we expose our bodies to substances which simply do not belong there, which therefore has a negative effect on our health and wellbeing. With “What makeup do you use?” a popular question within our BV community, Claudia shared with us what is in her current everyday makeup bag. These products change sometimes with seasons and Claudia often trials new products regularly. These are the current products she is finding best for her skin & facial features right now!

Inside Claudias Everyday Makeup Bag:

La Mav, BB-cream, Medium

Claudia applies BB-cream when going to The BareVitality Studio for her minimal makeup days and not wanting to put on foundation.

Nude By Nature, Liquid Mineral Concealer, Medium

Placed under the eyes. For those days when she feels a little bit worse for wear aka Fridays after a big week.

Nude By Nature, Flawless Liquid Foundation, Spiced Sand

This is for days when Claudia is after a little more coverage with meetings or catching up with friends. At first, she applies the  BB-cream as a primer and then a little bit of foundation on top.

Ilia, highlighter, Multiple Colours

This is a product Claudia multi-uses! For lips, as an eye shadow, cream bronzer & blush. They are infused with beautiful rosehip nourishing oils for the skin.

Natio, Long Lasting Eye Liner, Black

Days Claudia is not wearing mascara she puts on a little bit of eyeliner across the top of the eyelash liner to make the eyes appear fresh and awake.

W3ll People, Mascara, Black

Claudia uses mascara on top of her lashes for a simple & fresh effect, usually teamed with the days she adds foundation. When she is after a little bit more bold effect, she adds mascara for both bottom & top lashes.

While these are Claudia’s current favourites, please note these may not be the best options for you and your individual needs. Everyones face structure, skin type and a personal look is different. Claudia prefers a minimal natural look using mostly organic products. She also tries to multi-use products as much as possible for ease and to keep the make up bag light.

Hair care is something we often overlook. Supermarkets and chemists are filled with hair products wall to wall. How many advertisements on TV do we see promoting hair treatments claiming to fix your hair, making it stronger, longer and shinier.

Often we use chemical filled hair products. However, we forget that any substance you rub on your skin or inhale will enter your body just as if you had swallowed it.

Ingredients in hair products such as shampoo often can cause flaky and dry skin and irritation to the body and scalp.

Here are 5 of the main chemicals found in shampoo and conditioner that you should avoid…

  1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate can strip moisture from the scalp and skin.
  2. Sodium Laureth Sulfate can cause irritation to the skin and eyes
  3. Parabens have been linked to reproductive issues
  4. Fragrance can cause many toxic side effects to the body
  5. Polyethylene Glycol  can cause irritation and toxicity to the skin

Organic and natural hair care on the other hand is nourishing for hair, without the many harmful chemicals found in common hair products.

Some Benefits Of Natural Hair Care Include…

  • It doesn’t strip your scalp of the essential oils and cleans it with a much milder formula
  • It is safer for your skin. Many of the ingredients in natural hair care are recommended for sensitive skin.
  • Organic hair care uses natural products, benefiting both the environment and waterways.
  • Natural hair products are free from synthetic chemicals and irritants.
  • Overtime, natural hair products result in shiny, strong and healthy locks!

Some Natural Hair Care Products From Your Kitchen Cupboard…

  • Coconut oil deeply conditions the hair, detangles and treats dandruff
  • Apple Cider Vinegar is balancing for the hair, has antibacterial and anti fungal properties
  • Honey seals in moisture, strengthens hair and stimulates growth
  • Beer surprisingly strengthens your hair and promotes shine
  • Lemon stimulates growth and has lightening properties especially for blonde hair
  • Olive oil can be used to rid dandruff and help fix fly-aways and split ends
  • Egg whites applied to clean damp hair can help ease dry or brittle hair
  • Try mashing a banana and avocado together for a quick and easy hair mask for stronger and softer hair

So instead of reaching for that bottle of shampoo, why not reach for one of the ingredients in your kitchen cupboard to treat your hair naturally! If you want to learn more about natural beauty tips, read this post about ways to have healthy and natural skin!

I didn’t always have clear, healthy glowing skin. As a teen like many of us, I struggled with breakouts and even now I get the odd one here and there. My skin use to be overly sensitive, patchy, prone to blackheads and breakouts and I often had dark circles under my eyes. Natural Skin Care Routine

Unfortunately the appearance of our skin can have a huge impact upon our self confidence, particularly when we are young. I can definitely say having trouble with breakouts effected my self confidence and self worth in early years.

So what has this got to do with holistic health? LOTS!!

Firstly our inside radiates our outside. Healthy skin all starts in the gut! An unbalanced gut can be caused by stress, the food we eat (or don’t eat) and what we drink.

Secondly as I mentioned before, trouble skin can have a big impact on our self esteem. Just think about the times when you are having a really good skin and hair day. You walk around tall with confidence and a go-get-em attitude!! Very Aussie I know!! But with this attitude and confidence we can really take on the purpose of our day.

So whats my current natural skin care routine and what helped me with trouble skin?

What helped me:

  • A routined natural skin care system (see below).
  • Ditch the chemicals. Both in your skin care, food and environment. Toxins in = toxins out (aka breakouts).
  • Manage stress through mindfulness practices.
  • Healing the gut and consuming and wide range of nutritious foods.
  • Quit most dairy, gluten and refined sugars! These are huge skin culprits.
  • Add good oils to the skin, don’t avoid them. If we are using oil free skin care that is continually drying out our natural skin oils… guess what?? The skin is just going to produce more of these unwanted oils to compensate, leading to blocked pores and breakouts. Replacing these oils with ‘good’ skin nourishing oils such as coconut oil and rose hip will help balance out your skins pH.
  • Sweat regularly with a Holistic Fitness Routine and don’t forget to cleanser the skin afterwards.

My Natural Skin Care Routine:

Mornings:

  1. First thing I cleanse using an all natural cleanser and warm water.
  2. I then apply a few drips of rose hip oil to protect my skin from the days elements + I also find it creates a dewy, healthy glow under whatever I put on next.
  3. If its just a day with PT clients I then just add an all natural BB Cream (all in 1 moisturiser, coverage and sunscreen). When Im getting a bit more dressed up ill use a day moisturiser over the reship oil and then my usual make up on top.

Evenings:

  1. I always remove ALL make up before bed. I can honestly say I have never once in my life gone to bed with make up on!! While you sleep, your skin repairs so provide it with a clean base and nourishing moisture to do so. If I’m wearing make up, my first step is always cleansing. If I’m not, I skip to the next step.
  2. A gentle exfoliator helps remove dead skin cells and clean pores. In the evenings I gently rub in a circular motion the exfoliator over my face and neck. Easiest done in the shower. Then rinse with warm water and pat dry.
  3. A spray of toner or hydrating mist.
  4. Next I apply my oil of choice. Sometimes rose hip or sometimes a bit of coconut oil. Coconut oil is also great for removing make up naturally.
  5. Then a light layer of nourishing night moisturiser to seal in the goodness.

Once a week:

  • I apply a natural superfood green clay mask and chill back for 15 minutes in the bath or with a book or my legs up against a wall. This adds essential minerals and hydration for the skin to soak up.

And yes my skincare routine and products used do change here and there and from one season to the next depending on what my skin needs.

Trial and error with a routine and products is the best way to find a balance that works for YOU.

Currently I am using mostly the A’kin Skin Care range and the Today Is Ours skin mask.

I welcome the lovely Nik Toth, creator of  TheLeanBodyCoach.com to share with us natural ways to reduce cellulite.

I love Nik’s holistic approach to health and fitness and feel she so beautifully represents everything we stand for over her in our BareVitality community.

Nik is a holistic nutritionist, health coach, personal trainer and the author of the successful eBook The Lean Body Formula. She is passionate about educating and empowering women to create a healthy and lean body that they love and believes that transforming your body on the outside, begins from the inside….. and this is why we love her!! 🙂

Natural Ways To Reduce Cellulite – Nik Toth

Cellulite – it doesn’t discriminate- large or small, it’s something that many women struggle with. Unfortunately cellulite is nothing short of stubborn, and it affects women’s bodies more than men’s due to the difference in our skin structures.

You may feel as though you have to learn to live with it, if this is something you have struggled with for a while, however there are simple and effective ways of reducing it, or even making it disappear.

I used this method while I was preparing for a bikini fitness competition and it worked wonders.

The first secret is body brushing!

If you commit to body brushing on a daily basis it can make a significantly positive impact on your skin. Cellulite is a fat deposit in the subcutaneous layers of the skin that produces a cottage cheese-like appearance. The good news is that it is not a medical condition and it can be reduced or considerably improved.

But firstly, let’s look at the major contributor to the production of cellulite:

Your diet.

  1. Carbs:

Diet plays a great role in the formation of cellulite. Consuming large amounts of simple carbohydrates can contribute to extra dimples. White, processed foods such as bread, rice, flour and baked goods are made with refined ingredients, and thus lack a lot of nutrients. Swap them for their natural, wholegrain alternatives, which are much higher in nutrients and fibre.

  1. Protein:

Cellulite can also develop due to the weakening of the connective tissue in your skin. Protein can help repair the connective tissue and helps to reduce cellulite. Fill up your plate with fish, meat, eggs, nuts, seeds and legumes.

  1. Vitamin C:

Collagen production is essential for healthy skin; loading up on vitamin C rich foods helps strengthen the connective tissue of your skin and can reduce the appearance of cellulite.

  1. Fats:

Too much Omega 6 fats and too little Omega 3 essential fats and can also cause cellulite. Include more Omega 3 foods such as walnuts, fax seeds, chia seeds, and oily fish such as trout, salmon and mackerel.  Avoid unhealthy fats such as margarine, vegetable oils (canola, soybean, sunflower and corn) because they are highly processed and are extracted by using chemical substances. The majority of processed and ‘fast foods’ are made with these vegetable oils and they are major contributors to cellulite and to inflammation in the body.

  1. Exercise:

Resistance and weight training are highly beneficial when it comes to reducing cellulite. Training with weights is the secret to reducing body fat and increasing lean muscle aka definition. Try high intensity interval training (HIIT), which helps burn body fat faster whilst also improves your cardiovascular fitness. Losing weight alone won’t eliminate cellulite but it reduces the fat deposits under the skin and improves the look almost instantly.

Now back to my secret weapon – body brushing.

Dry body brushing is an effective weapon against cellulite, as well as a form of detoxification. It stimulates the lymphatic system, and helps eliminate waste products, as well as dead skin cells. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in eliminating harmful substances from our body.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Its best to do it before getting in the shower for 3-5 minutes, using a special body brush with soft bristles.
  2. Start by brushing the soles of your feet in circular motions, then moving onto your feet, ankles, knees as well as thighs and buttocks.
  3. Brush the arms from the palm to the elbow and then the upper arm. Brush gently the chest and abdomen area with lighter pressure; in circular strokes towards your heart this encourages lymph flow to your main lymphatic ducts.
  4. Do not brush sensitive areas such as your nipples and girly parts, wounds on the skin, varicose veins or sunburnt areas!

It’s that easy!

Make sure you do this daily for best results.

Natural Ways To Reduce Cellulite

I was recently featured as the ‘Muse Of The Moment’ by The Beauty Bible covering all things holistic beauty.

Beauty products I can not live without, favourite beauty trend, my skin care routine….

What is the one beauty product you cannot live without?
Lamav Organic BB Creme. This stuff is amazing and my sensitive skin loves it! It’s my everyday sunscreen, moisturiser and light coverage (yet very effective). Perfect for exercising or my day to day when I don’t feel like wearing makeup.

Skincare routine?
I find I need to mix up my skin care routine dependant on season, activity level and my current health at the time. Typically however I start the day by cleansing my skin and a small amount of rosehip oil. In the evenings I exfoliate, apply coconut oil and then moisturiser on top. Being outdoors for most of the day my skin really needs that hydration.
Once a week, usually a Sunday night, I set a clay face mask and lie with my feet up against a wall to calm my system and let the minerals do their magic!
Check the rest out HERE!

 Natural healthy skin tips

Our skin is the bodies largest organ and absorbs anything it comes into contact with. Therefore every chemical in your moisturisers, make up, deodorant, sunscreen, soaps and face washes are being absorbed directly into your blood stream, slowing down the liver and kidneys detoxification process and resulting in far from optimal health and that desired outer glow.

I generally try to only put on my skin what I would be happy putting in my mouth or know the product will not cause any stress to my body with absorption.

I, like most was not blessed with absolute skin perfection, however I do follow a number of basic skin care steps to avoid toxic build up in my body, care for my skin and give it that healthy glow.

Here is some of my favourites;

– My 2 favourite skin care staples are Rose hip oil and Coconut oil. Buying the pure stuff is not only more effective but also very affordable. I use coconut oil to manage blemishes, moisturise my entire skin, instead of shaving cream, also as a deep hair moisturising mask and as a antibacterial cleanser. Rose hip oil I use around my eyes at night for anti ageing benefits and to reduce the appearance of dark circles (a result of adrenal issues) and as a potent healing tool from damage due to sun exposure.

– I exfoliate once a week by mixing coconut oil and raw organic sugar/coconut flesh and/ or oats together for smooth, clear skin.

– Remember to drink lots of filtered water. Organic green tea and lemon & warm water drinks are also very beneficial to healthy skin.

– As a hydrating antioxidant spray I brew a cup of filtered water with peppermint green tea, allow it to cool and refrigerate in a little spray bottle.

– A healthy inside = a healthy outside! So therefore good nutrition is essential towards healthy skin. Including lots of foods packed with antioxidants, fibre, good fats and proteins. Think fresh, organic and variety! Also avoid trigger foods and and substances such as anything processed, sugars, alcohol, bad fats, poor quality dairy and caffeine.

– Apple Cider Vinegar makes a wonderful toner for creating balanced skin and preventing/ reducing blemishes and uneven skin tones. Just mix 2 part apple cider vinegar to 4 parts filtered water and apply to freshly cleansed skin.

– I love applying a clay mask to rejuvenate my skin with lots of natural minerals or a mashed avocado with manuka honey (& super delicious when it melts & runs down into your mouth). While I aim to do this once a week realistically once every 2-3 weeks I throw on a mask and relax with a cup on tea for 10-15 minutes.

– Epson salt baths are a great way to detoxify the body through the skin. Just remember to drink lots of water.

– My daily moisturiser contains natural sunscreen for UV protection.

– I try to wear little make up on a daily basis to allow my skin to breath. I love to use a natural tinted moisturiser for basic day wear and opt for natural mineral foundation/ powders for those days/ nights  out when I’m after a stronger base coverage. One thing I can not stress enough is never sleep in make up. This is the time your skin is repairing and detoxifying so only have nourishing and moisturising ingredients on it while you sleep.

– Stress is the enemy of healthy skin. Practice mindfulness daily and facial exercises to relax the facial muscles and improve blood flow to the skin.

Have fun experimenting with natural skin care for healthy, glowing skin!

I would love to hear your favourite healthy skin tips and tricks?
