Before we moved into our new home I bought a big bundle of sage to cleanse the space or all energy and spirits and make it ours. Smudging sage or cleansing with sage is a beautiful healing ritual to create a clear slate to ones body, mind or space. In my opinion, essential when moving into a new place, when diving into deep personal shifts &/ or meditative states and when you associate negativity with anything or anyone.

Sage derived from the Latin word “salvere”, which means “to heal.”

Below I have outlined a guide to creating your own cleansing with sage ritual of a space and your person in that space.

Space Cleansing With Sage Ritual:

  1. Open all windows, cupboards and doors to allow all that is negative to leave.
  2. Light the sage smudge stick at a 45 degree angle & allow to burn for 20 seconds or so. Blow out the flames gently, allowing it to smoulder.
  3. Set your intention for the ritual. I like to use – “I clear this space of all that is bad & negative & anything that is not aligned with love & light”.
  4. Start by cleansing & blessing yourself, head to feet with the smoke.
  5. Then your home or space. Start at the front door & move clock wise around the home focusing on spreading the smoke in every corner & cupboard. You can continue to chant the intention or your ritual as you make your way through the space.
  6. Conclude back at the front door where you began.
  7. Extinguish the sage by smothering the top using a fireproof surface, sand or dirt. Avoid using water so you are able to use the sage again.
  8. Leave all cupboards, windows and doors open for ideally a couple hours or as long as you can to allow all energy to release and exit  from you space and also the sage smoke smell to die down.

I usually buy my sage from Natures Energy.

While christmas is a beautiful time of year for most is typically is also the season of consumerism and indulgence. Both can be wonderful things when taking a balanced approach however thats usually not the case when christmas is involved. The act of giving and receiving, sharing time with loved ones, enjoying food and drink and the many traditions and celebrations that go along with Christmas are so special. Then there is the chaos, stress, financial burden, obligations, over indulging, accumulation of “stuff” ….

So how can you bring more of a minimalistic and balanced approach to your christmas season this year for greater happiness, health and wellbeing?

Don’t Over Commit

This means don’t commit to breakfast with Aunty Anne, Lunch with the in-laws and then Dinner with your parents. Christmas in not about traveling from one place to the other on a schedule. Its about sharing QUALITY time with others and mindfully enjoying the moments. For those you can’t cover on christmas day, organise celebrations around the other days such as Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Years Eve or even a delayed celebration lunch a few weeks past christmas.

Think Quality Not Quantity

Present giving sadly can become a stressful and expensive activity, particularly when your list of people to buy for keeps increasing from year to year! Why not organise a secret santa system with the family and your friends circle and then bake up a batch of yummy christmas cookies to gift to everyone else. Try our Gingerbread Spelt Cookie Recipe! Making or buying christmas decorations to gift is also a lovely way to give from the heart that does not leave a big dent in the pocket.

Respect Your Body

While your mind may switch to “its christmas time, that means health is on pause”, your body does not really work that way. Keep some sort of balance with your health routine is really important to allow you to feel your best heading into the new year both physically and mentally. We are not saying no drinking or christmas pudding. Rather enjoy a little more alcohol and indulgent foods than you normally would, however make that extra effort to maintain some balance. Try to include a daily green smoothie, move your body in someway everyday and take even just 5 minutes a day to spend in meditation to ground yourself. Following The BareVitality Studio Online Program can help keep you on track!

Come Back To What Matters To You

What do you love most about Christmas time? The carols, time with family, cooking, decorating, the time off work… Whatever you love most about christmas, mindfully focus on those 1-3 things this year. Truely feeling them, be present in the moments and cherish the memories and satisfaction they bring.

Going green in your home and making better choices for the environment and your health does not necessarily mean a lot of effort. A more eco organised kitchen can be put together quite easily by implementing some of the below tips and tricks. It’s important to be mindful towards our footprint on this earth. Therefore here are our hacks to help you start by creating an eco organised kitchen!

Hacks For An Eco Organised Kitchen

Start Using Reusable Shopping Bags

Create a space in your kitchen for reusable shopping bags so you will easily see them. Making them visible helps you to remember better to take one with you when going to the store. This is a great way to use less plastic bags and hopefully keep our marine life in better shape.

Make A Recycling Corner

Make sure you have a space created so you can recycle waste as it is needed according to your local waste service provider. This is to make your space sustainable and have an eco organised kitchen. Each week aim for less and less waste. Add compost bin as well so you can compost food waste to eliminate greenhouse gas methane.

Store Your Food In Reusable Jars

Don’t throw used glass jars away, instead make them reusable by washing them and use them to organise your pantry. Reusable jars are perfect to be filled with whole food products which can be bought in bulk. This helps you to use less plastic packaging and is an easy way to organise your food products. You can also buy glass or black jars & label the jars easily with stickers or product labels!

Switch Plastic Wraps To Beeswax Wraps

Wrap your food without any waste. Beeswax wraps (or cotton/hemp) are a great replacement for plastic wraps to carry your snack with you and keep them fresh. This is a must have product for an eco organised kitchen!

Use Eco-Friendly Products

Use only natural & eco-friendly cleaning products and equipment in the kitchen. Most of the grocery stores have eco-friendly products in their selection. Even better if making your own cleaning products at home! There are lots of natural DIY recipes available. Switch your plastic kitchen equipment to wooden ones to make them more natural and last longer.

Grow Your Own Herbs

Enjoy the benefit of fresh herbs in your meals by growing them in your own eco-friendly space. This way you consume less of packaging needed for the greens and in addition they add a lovely touch of green decor in your kitchen. What a fun way to go green!

Invest In Kitchen Towels

Use less paper towels in your kitchen by investing in more kitchen tea towels. Kitchen tea towels are reusable and eco-friendly. Not to forget they add a spark to the space by choosing different colours and patterns!

Be Mindful When Running The Dishwasher

Don’t run the dishwasher unless it’s completely full. Hand wash your day to day cups, bowls as you use them to save on loads.  It’s wise to run the dishwasher in the evening to start a new day with a clean kitchen and clear kitchen!

Organise With Wooden Boxes

Invest in wooden boxes to keep your kitchen items in order and easy to find. You can also reuse shoe boxes and give them a makeover to fit well with your kitchen style! A little way for you to have a creative moment as well!

Making our home more eco organised isn’t only good for the environment. It makes us feel happy, is better for our health and we create a space that is unique!

The best healthy restaurants in Sydney

After a long day, it’s nice to relax and catch up on some precious sleep. The environment you sleep in is so important to the quality of rest, therefore our bedroom should be a place where we feel happy & peaceful. Creating a bedroom oasis with the feng shui happening helps us create a calm & happy centre to get the rest we need for our health and wellbeing. Here are our simple tips in organising an optimal environment for a good nights sleep!

Create Your Perfect Bedroom Oasis:

  • Feng shui in the bedroom starts with the simple step of reducing clutter in your room. So, keep it tidy & minimalistic!
  • Try to position the bed against a wall, across from the door. Avoid the door being too close to your head however.
  • Choose colours that make you feel calm & happy. Claudia finds neutral colours a great option to avoid overstimulating the mind before sleep.
  • Have visible items that bring you joy when you look at them. It’s easy to have unnecessary pieces on your bedside table but try to avoid this. Place the rest in a draw near by!
  • No TV in the room & minimal power points in use and hide power cords. Place cords behind dressers or tables and keep them covered.
  • Open the windows and allow fresh air in daily! If the air you breathe in is “stuffy”, good feng shui can’t happen. We also recommend a good quality air-purifier!
  • Include indoor plants to purify the air and place them not too close to the bed to keep the feng shui?
  • Befriend essential oils. Claudia loves using them on her pillow or in a defuser. She is currently using a “Sleep Time” blend.
  • Stay on top of dust & mould.
  • And most importantly – create a space that makes you happy!

Having good feng shui & creating your bedroom oasis is soothing to the soul. It promotes nourishing energy and helps us to sleep better. So, why not put these steps into action and get creating your perfect bedroom oasis! Check out our post to see the reasons why rest is essential for our bodies.

Happy Sleeping!

[email protected]

We are less than 3 months out from our special day and I have received ALOT of questions regarding what I am doing in prep. So here you have it, my compiled bridal health, fitness & wellbeing routines all in one place + a little update on our day!

It’s all about love

Now I never was that girl who dreamt of her wedding day or if I am completely honest was never hugely excited about the whole planning part of a wedding. Don’t get me wrong, I love weddings, all they symbolise and always wanted to get married. The whole build up of the event itself just isn’t my thing. The thing that does make me SO excited about our day is saying “I DO” to the love of my life and sharing that with our nearest and dearest. My partner is much the same and we seem to both be extra excited about everything we get to share with marriage. We organised our honeymoon before the wedding to put things into context haha…

We planned a 13 month engagement. Mostly because we just really wanting to mindfully enjoy this time as an engaged couple and aim to leisurely plan the wedding along the way in the most fun, stress free way we could. Therefore, we also chose to not stress about saving or planning throughout this time. We always envisioned a simple wedding and this engagement time we wanted to symbolise adventure, joy, lightness and love. There has been a bit of traveling this year, tried new challenges and continued to focus on growing as both individuals and as a couple.

We have been determined to have the day represent us as a couple, full only of love, happiness and celebration. We chose not to care for the smaller details (this just isn’t us) and place our attention in creating a celebratory atmosphere based around food, wine and entertainment. Let’s take a look on my bridal health, fitness & wellbeing plans!

Focusing on my bridal health, fitness & wellbeing

Now I work in health, fitness and wellbeing and live a pretty balanced and heathy lifestyle already. I also have had many clients over the years come to me, pre-wedding with the goal to lose weight, tone up and feel empowered. So not long after we became engaged, I was first asked ‘what I will be doing pre wedding?’. I realised I hadn’t even thought about it! While I knew I didn’t want to lose weight, I did want to find a little more balance in my own personal fitness and health routines. Very easy these have become second to my clients goals. My wedding became an opportunity to actually priorities MY health so I decided to take it!

Now my routines are nothing special or even consistent, but they have given me a reason to be selfish and priorities my health when I can.

My goals;

  • Grow my hair thicker and longer
  • Consume more veg and less sugars
  • Improve energy levels
  • Build up greater strength and balance in my physical body
  • Increase that skin glow

My Bridal Health, Fitness & Wellbeing Routines:

Hair:

When we got engaged my hair was at shoulder height and had been at this shorter length for a good year and a half. I have always liked it long, but with my ‘no maintenance’ beauty attitude, it was just so much work!! If you didn’t know, my hair is naturally curly which = always tangled, prone to being dry and time consuming. Its not as curly as it use to be and I now get keratin treatments. I therefore don’t have to straighten it and it appears healthier and stronger. Before I get married I decided I would give this longer hair thing a go again. Mostly so I would have more options when it came to hair styles on the day.

Other than the keratin treatment every 4-5  months, I have been taking Natures Way Beauty Collagen Gummies, coconut oil through my hair as a mask once every couple of months, left overnight + I am avoiding chemicals, harsh sun and straightners/ hair dryer use. As well as a regular hair trim every 10 weeks or so.

Nutrition:

I go from really good weeks of lots and lots of fresh fruit and veg to other weeks when it just hasn’t happened. Mostly as a result of the crazy work hours excuse but I have been conscious of it and definitely my overall fruit and veg intake has increased. I am also consciously trying to reduce my sweet tooth and choose more savoury snacks. The after dinner 2 squares of chocolate routine isn’t going anywhere however. There is nothing I am restricting, just being more conscious of including more of the “good stuff”! I don’t feel like smoothies in this cooler weather as much, but as it starts to warm up I will be utilising them as a way to pack in the superfoods.

Energy:

My biggest energy zapper has always been stress. So automatically this year I have tried to reduce my work hours (with some success) and avoid all unnecessary stress, wedding planning included. I have made an effort to not over commit in my social calendar or work schedule. My sleep and wake routine has been fantastic and I have incorporated more mindful slow walks and meditative practices into my week. I have also been getting a series off regular Acupuncture treatments at The Village Remedies, local to the BV Studio for my energy and circulation. I have also been including Go Healthy’s High Strength Magnesium to combat the effects stress from exercise, work or just life has on my body.

Fitness:

While I have placed more attention on my own fitness goals this year, the consistency hasn’t been fantastic as of yet. This I am hoping to focus on in the upcoming months. I have switched to more low intensity exercise including yoga, pilates, walking and gentle strength/ technique work, rather than high intensity which my body is not needing with its current energy levels. Just moving has definitely improved with the use of my new Fossil Hybrid Watch tracking my steps each day. I have set 10,000 steps as my daily goal and have enjoyed upping my walks and incidental activity to reach this number.

Skin:

As we know an inner glow = an outer glow! So my digestive health has been of focus, including fermented foods, a daily probiotic and of course a balanced healthy diet with lots of those fruit and veg! Along with Go Healthy’s Go Beautiful Skin Supplements and the supplements mentioned under “Hair”. I have also implemented a solid skin care routine. I am currently using Andalou Naturals Skin Care Range with their Turmeric and Vit C Brightening Serum a favourite. Trilogy exfoliator a couple of times a week and every 3-4 months I have been treating myself to a facial. Now we are a bit closer to the day, I may increase that to monthly facials. My focus is on making my skin appear healthy, glowy and not tired!

Taking care of our health and wellbeing and living in a holistic manner also means that we need to take care of our environment, our planet. Find below tips to address every room of the house to create an eco-friendly home.

Each year that passes, new studies arise about how we are putting ourselves and future generations in danger due to the abuse and neglect that we give to our planet. Luckily, we have become more aware of our negative impacts and people are finally doing something about it! From going vegan to replacing all plastic bags in shops, there are many steps that we can take to be more eco-friendly.

You don’t even need to do anything extreme… small changes can make a huge amount of difference! By making simple changes, we begin to appreciate the earth and to realize that it is not something to be taken for granted. Thus, we strongly suggest that you incorporate practicing mindfulness whilst you are doing these, which in turn will give you a new sense of appreciation for what we have.

Here are our top 16 cost-effective ways to create a more eco-friendly home:

Living room

1. Unplug your TV when it’s not in use, to save electricity.

2. Use CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs instead of incandescent light bulbs to save 66% more energy.

Kitchen

3. Use low energy appliances.

4. Clean with vinegar, a natural way to kill germs bacteria and mould. We also like using Koala Eco with its beautiful packaging and convenient eco friendly packaging.

5. Avoid food wastage. $8 billion worth of edible household food wastage each year goes into Australian land fill. Only buy what you need and bring left overs for lunch the next day.

Bedroom

6. Include indoor houseplants to improve the air quality in your bedroom. Also assists with a better night sleep.

7. Install energy efficient windows. Did you know heat gain and heat loss through windows are responsible for 25–30% of residential heating and cooling energy use.

8. Keep all electronics out of the bedroom for not only your wellbeing and health, but also to reduce your eco footprint.

Bathroom/ Laundry

9. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.

10. Install water saving shower head filters.

11. Buy recycled toilet paper. We love Who Gives A Crap!

12. Choose eco friendly washing powders or make your own.

13. Hang your clothes on the line instead of using the dryer.

Garden

14. Plant plants that are native to your area.

15. Use homemade pesticides.

16. Have a compost bin to reduce the need for water, fertilizers, and pesticides.

We hope these eco-friendly home tips have been useful and encourage you to start taking responsibility for your foot print. Small gestures make a big impact!
