Hi, there!  I’m Jonna, part of The BareVitality team and today we are going to take you behind the scenes of starting & running a business.. we thought it would be a fun idea to interview Claudia and talk a little bit about being a young entrepreneur. So, keep reading and see what it takes to run a business, from Claudia’s point of view!

1. How old were you & what was your first step when you decided to take the leap of starting your own business? Tell us more, what preparations you needed to do for all it to happen?

I actually registered BareVitality as a business when I was 20 years old, just about to turn 21! I had to actually just then look that up and can’t believe it- crazy!!! It initially was just a blog as a hobby where I mostly shared recipes and a bit of health & fitness advice. I was working as a PT (personal trainer) at the time. I then started the physical side of BareVitality when I was 22 years old. I had just moved out of Sydney with a boyfriend at the time and honestly didn’t really think about it much. I had just left a job where I was running group and private sessions and felt it was pretty easy, so when I moved I just used the blog name and advertised under BareVitality for PT and Group Training. After that the story went; relationship ended, I moved back to Balmain, Sydney where I had grown up and then just used the same template I had and started advertising Outdoor Training in Balmain. There has been no point in where I really had a plan or business goals in mind. I was just doing what I loved and naturally as my interests grew, so did my business.

2. What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learnt in starting and running your business? If you could do anything different, what & why?

Do what you do best and outsource the rest! I have the tendency to want to do EVERYTHING. Realistically however I am not strong in everything and I learnt my business would succeed so much more if I solely focused on what I love and I am best at! By wanting to do everything, it’s a sure way to get run down and the quality of your work suffers. I now don’t do any of the roles I least enjoy, because I spend way too much time procrastinating about them rather than just smashing what I do best.

I probably wouldn’t do anything different as every situation that did not turn out as expected was a fantastic learning opportunity that made me a stronger person and business owner.

3. Walk us through a typical day of yours. How do you prioritise your tasks?

Everyday is SO different. My calendar depends on events, staff availability and current projects. Typically however an ordinary day would look like this;

5.15am – wake up, get ready and head to The BareVitalty Studio

6-10.30am – Clients in the studio, usually with a quick coffee and breakfast break in between.

11am- Emails, social media, business admin

12pm- Home for lunch and a nap (swear by the naps)

2pm – More emails, social media, business admin

3pm – Take my dog for a little walk. Use this time to meditate in the park and reset before back to clients.

4.30-8pm – Clients in The BareVitality Studio.

8.15pm – Dinner, TV and chats with my husband.

9.30pm – Off to sleep

 

Then somedays I have events, meeting or morning/ evenings off which change up the routine.

 

I have become quite ruthless with prioritising. Time is energy and I know I have to keep the balance for not only my body to run efficiently but also my business. I prioritise urgent emails then don’t take the rest too seriously or forward onwards. I consider carefully who I collaborate with. I make my health the first priority and not others expectations.

4. What do you worry the most when it comes to running your business and how do you cope with it?

There is a lot of unknown in running a business. No set paycheck for the month, no set hours, no assurance on any level. This is what also makes it an adventure. I know I am good at what I do and I love it so much… the rest is just living the passion and riding the highs and lows.

5. As a business owner, it must not be easy to stop working.. How do you find a work-life balance & have you discovered how to avoid a burn out? What is the secret?

Boundaries!! I don’t answer messages on weekends at all. I avoid my phone in the evenings. I employ staff members who I can trust 100% and know they have things handled when I’m not on the floor. Burnout is always a fine line for me. I certainly haven’t mastered it yet as I do push that line often. I do however value other parts of my life even more than my work, so I make sure the time and space is there to enjoy and nurture these other areas.

6. Tell us the pros and cons of being an entrepreneur?

  • Pros = creative freedom, flexibility, so many soul-filling hours, everything is in my hands to take in whatever direct I please, relationships built, exposure to extreme personal and business growth.

 

  • Cons = long hours, under-paid, need to be contactable most the time, you are provided with obstacles every week, being the face responsible for everything.

7. And the last but not the least, tell us something that I haven’t asked that you think is important and you want to share with all aspiring future business owners!

If your passionate about something, give it a go on the side. If it really lifts off then you can cut back your other hours and start making it a real thing. Worst come to worst, it was a soul-filling project and life experience but didn’t send you in debt and jobless. A big mistake many new business owners make is jumping in 100%, too early.

Also, don’t do it alone. If it is a sole run business at least connect to other like-minded peeps in business for support and inspiration.

Money isn’t everything in life, but you need it almost for everything, right? Rent, groceries, fuel, hobbies, traveling, clothing… Not surprising why financial concerns are regular. Worrying has a significant effect on your daily life – focusing on work and relationships is hard when having financial stress on your shoulders. Therefore here are some ways of dealing with financial stress.

Ways Of Dealing With Financial Stress:

Plan a Budget

Write your budget down and stick with your plan! When you know exactly how much money is coming in and going out, it helps to avoid unnecessary spending habits you might have. Sticking with the plan releases worrying after you realise, you are having the control of your financial situation. Here you can find some tips, how to set up a budget!

Prioritise Expenses

Make a list of what are the most important things for you in your daily life. Sometimes it’s wise to limit some spending habits to a minimum to make more significant plans possible in the future. For example, you might find eating in a restaurant less important than exploring the world during your next holiday. Life is more stress free when you spend your money on the things what brings you joy, and that you actually value the most.

Avoid Debt & Loans

Try to use a debit card instead of a credit card for purchases. This way you can control spending too much and avoid debt. When it comes to loans, only sign up after careful evaluation of the best loan for your needs and only for the most necessary investments. Avoid the stress of managing lots of loans. Keep your loans simple and minimal.

Save For Emergencies

Unexpected costs can be really stressful to handle. Especially if you don’t have any extra money to cover your expenses. Try to put even a little amount of money aside every month. It will release a lot of stress when you know you have extra funds to turn to, in case something surprising happens.

Take Care Of Yourself

Focus on what makes you happy. Fixing financial struggles is easier with a positive mindset. Try to do things that are good for your wellbeing. Usually, these things don’t even cost a lot of money. Exercising and eating healthy are great steps in feeling good within yourself. Having a healthy balance in your life is helpful with releasing stress. Yoga, running, reading, what makes you feel good…?

Money Is Only Money

Remember what is important for you and adds more value in your life. Feeling joy and love around you eases the stress you might be having. So, spending time with the people who are closest to you will have the greatest effect on your happiness and wellbeing. Spend some quality time with your family, or do something fun with your friends. Saying concerns out loud can release worry when dealing with financial stress. So, next time you are going for a coffee with your friends, share your concerns rather than bottling them in. They might be struggling with a similar situation currently or possible either in the past or future. Talking together can result in a weight off the shoulders of both involved.

The saying ‘less is more’ is surprisingly true when is comes to spending. Many, (ourselves included) are guilty of spending unnecessarily on material items that do not serve a purpose in our lives. The BareVitality  Studio is so excited to share with you our top 4 holistic tips to incorporate into your everyday routine to achieve health, wellness, success, and happiness!

 

At the beginning of 2017, we set out the goals and aspirations that we wanted to achieve. Come 2018, those goals remain unmet and we are doing it all over again. We find ourselves in the same cyclical process: being extremely determined, setting goals, starting to work towards them, feeling overwhelmed, and giving up until we create the next lot of New Year’s resolutions that are basically the same as the previous year. Today, we encourage you to set a new goal for 2018: to take a holistic approach to your life and wellbeing. This lifestyle choice will create a snowball effect and you will gradually start to see your goals being achieved across all areas of your life.

 

But what does holistic mean? And what does living a holistic lifestyle entail?

 

Holistic is a concept that states that the parts of anything are interconnected and intimately linked to the whole. A holistic lifestyle then is based on the belief that every aspect of their life affects a person’s well-being. Therefore to achieve a balanced and enriched life, every element of an individual’s life, including emotional and mental well-being, health and fitness, spirituality, relationships, career, connection with the community, must be equally nourished.

 

With that said, here are our holistic tips to achieve success in all aspects of your life in 2018:

 

1. Find a balanced approach to exercise.

2017 saw the rapid rise of quick fix workout guides, whereby the use of strategic and enticing marketing lead people to believe that you could achieve the body of your dreams and regain your health in an incredibly tight timeframe, without revealing the health and wellbeing repercussions. So, with that said, the first of our holistic tips is to not buy into these highly marketed quick fix programs but rather, to slow down when it comes to exercise and focus on the journey.

 

Here’s why…

 

Quick fix programs are not only ineffective, but their strict and narrowly focused regiments can take a toll both physically and mentally. They ignore a balanced approach and instead focus strictly on one aspect such as cardio, HIIT, or even weightlifting.  This narrow focus causes the body to burn out, creating extreme fatigue, adrenal damage, and subsequent excessive eating as we subconsciously seek to obtain energy in compensation for the exhaustion. This is not what exercise is supposed to do!

 

Exercise is imperative for your energy levels in your daily life, be it at work, home or play. However, exercise will elevate your energy levels, only if done the right way. I encourage you to try the holistic alternative, namely to find balance in your fitness routine. If you find something you enjoy, you will stick with it. At the Balmain BareVitality Studio, clients balance their workouts by completing a range of classes such as circuit training, mat toning, boxing, and yoga.By slowing things down you achieve results faster by avoiding burnout and excessive eating, which in turn leads to perceived failure and a constant repetition of the tortuous cyclical process.

 

2. Eat more, but better.

 

The second of the holistic tips is to focus on what you should put in your body rather than what you shouldn’t be eating. Forget about excessive dieting and an almost obsessive focus on not eating certain food types. Instead, concentrate on putting more good food in your body so that you have sufficient energy for the day. An effective way of ensuring a high level of nutrition is through conscious meal planning and preparation. Make time to plan and cook meals for the week ahead and store them in your freezer!

 

This prevents us from grabbing unwholesome foods when we are too tired or too busy to cook.

 

3. Journaling

 

Including journaling as a keystone habit in your daily routine is one of the best things you can do to enable success, happiness, and mental and emotional health for yourself. Journaling is a mix of meditation and self-evaluation, and it is of paramount importance to your health as a whole. For starters, it is extremely beneficial in enabling the growth of your emotional intelligence. There is nothing worse than having a fight with a loved one and then having to go to work, leaving the argument unresolved and the lines of communication shut down. This has a negative impact on your state of mind and performance at work that day.

 

Instead, take several minutes out of your day to journal. Jot down your feelings and thoughts, and what the other person may be feeling. After time alone reflecting, you will find that even if you are not at fault your perspective may shift and you will be better able to display empathy and understanding, increasing your chances of finding a resolution rather than holding on to anger or resentment.

 

This practice can be used in the workplace as well, enabling you to shift perspective, understand colleagues and work through solutions to problems. Apropos of this, journaling is a useful tool for improving your career. Writing down career goals, both short and long-term, or setting goals for the day and reflecting on them afterward along with gains and setbacks, increase your professional awareness, enables you to work through challenges, and provides the motivation to achieve your desired outcomes.

 

In addition, this practice improves concentration and focus, teaches self-discipline, and provides mental clarity. You should aim to implement this each day, even for just 10 minutes each morning.

 

4. Find a better balance between life and technology

 

My last of the holistic tips is to find a better balance between your everyday life and technology. Unfortunately, this has become increasingly challenging. Social media has enabled us to instantly connect with each other. In some ways, social media has made it easier for us to form connections, through meeting new people online, being able to communicate with friends within seconds, and even by relying on Instagram to create awareness of our business.

 

It is not until we meet with our friend for coffee-and find that their responses to our attempts to interact with them are excruciatingly delayed by 5 seconds as they read and respond to someone else’s message- that we realise how detrimental social media can be to our health.

 

Our social skills have declined and the ability to effectively communicate in person has been reduced.

 

Overused, social media becomes a legitimate addiction. When we receive a like on our Instagram photo or a message on Facebook etc, our neurons release a chemical called dopamine, a chemical that makes us feel good when we engage in other addictive feel-good activities such as drinking, taking drugs, and smoking.

 

Because of this, we’re lacking the knowledge to form deep meaningful relationships. There’s nothing wrong with social media and cell phones when used wisely and with restraint but it’s the imbalance that harms us. Like all addictions, it will destroy relationships in time, waste time, and distract you from your goals.

 

A simple lifestyle choice is to put your phone in your bag or leave it at home when you’re catching up with friends and family. And instead of relying on social media to interact, why not participate in more community events or join a fitness studio, allowing you to form connections that in turn will make you feel happier and more fulfilled.
