These baked sweet potato, lentil & tofu balls contain brown rice and sweet potato both of which are low GI carbs, keeping you full for longer and releasing energy slowly and sustainably.

The great thing about this recipe is you can cook a batch of these nourishing balls at the beginning of the week and serve with a leafy salad and this lovely tumeric tahini dip (or any other dip of your choice) in the recipe below. These are also vegan friendly and GF! So having these balls ready to go, makes life so much easier and convenient! And as an extra plus, there are not many steps or ingredients in the recipe. A bonus for many of us I am sure.

Makes: 20

1 cup cooked brown rice

1 large sweet potato, peeled and roughly chopped

1 tin lentils, drained and rinsed

1/2 block tofu, cubed

1/2 cup peas (frozen or fresh, if frozen make sure they are defrosted)

Small bit of ginger, crushed (quarter your thumb size, can also use 1/2 tsp ginger powder)

2 tsp curry powder

1/2 tbsp tahini

Tumeric Tahini

1 tbsp tahini

1/4 tsp tumeric

Squeeze of lemon

1 tbsp water to thin out

Preheat the oven to 170 degrees celsius and line a baking tray with baking paper.

Place half the sweet potato, half the lentils and half the tofu and process in a food processor until combined.

Add remaining sweet potato, lentils, tofu along with the rice, peas, ginger, curry powder and tahini and process until roughly combined (you still want a bit of texture to the mixture!).

Form into round balls and place on the baking tray.

Bake for around 30-35 mins or until golden and cooked through.

For the tumeric tahini, combine all ingredients until well combined and smooth.

Serve these baked sweet potato, lentil & tofu balls along side the tumeric tahini and a green salad and enjoy!

Taking care of our health and wellbeing and living in a holistic manner also means that we need to take care of our environment, our planet. Find below tips to address every room of the house to create an eco-friendly home.

Each year that passes, new studies arise about how we are putting ourselves and future generations in danger due to the abuse and neglect that we give to our planet. Luckily, we have become more aware of our negative impacts and people are finally doing something about it! From going vegan to replacing all plastic bags in shops, there are many steps that we can take to be more eco-friendly.

You don’t even need to do anything extreme… small changes can make a huge amount of difference! By making simple changes, we begin to appreciate the earth and to realize that it is not something to be taken for granted. Thus, we strongly suggest that you incorporate practicing mindfulness whilst you are doing these, which in turn will give you a new sense of appreciation for what we have.

Here are our top 16 cost-effective ways to create a more eco-friendly home:

The saying ‘less is more’ is surprisingly true when is comes to spending. Many, (ourselves included) are guilty of spending unnecessarily on material items that do not serve a purpose in our lives. So how can we change this and really live by ‘less is more’ and why? What are benefits it holds? We wanted to know the answers that could potentially save us a lot of money! Here is the secret of spending less and gaining more.

An important question to ask yourself is how do you define rich. Being rich doesn’t necessarily mean having a huge house and a fancy car. What matters is the richness of your life. Who you spend time with, work that you love doing, hobbies that bring joy to you, exploration of new places- this is what being rich is all about. Rich with life experiences.

With the influence of consumerism and marketing, we start to believe that we need ‘things’ to be happy, to succeed and so on. This takes up a LOT of mental energy! How much time do we waste thinking about what to buy next- new clothes, new technology, a new cushion, the latest health gadget…. the list goes on. We will always have wants, but how many of those wants do we actually need?

We often forget that the finest joys in life are absolutely free. We believe that the more items we have- that this will make us happy. Too often we have those moments where we look around the room and think why did I buy this?! Hello impulse shopping! Instead enjoy the little things in life that are free, the activities you love….. painting, reading, going for a walk. These will be so much more beneficial to your wellbeing and free up mental energy. Check out these 50 ways to be more mindful!

Financial stress isn’t good for you or those around you. Always needing the latest things is stressful and trying to arrange your finances to purchase those items is even more stressful. More often than not, we relay the stress on our partners causing strained relationships. We need to remember the importance of clear and open communication and keeping our core values in sight when it comes to spending and relationships.

Now, there ARE necessities that we need to spend money on but its important to focus on quality of life instead of quantity. We get so caught up in the day to day motions of life, spending being one of them, that we forget to appreciate the joys in life. Spending time with loved ones, walking in nature, having a home cooked meal with friends, laughing so hard it hurts your belly. Spending less  teaches us we don’t need to focus on material items but instead on the quality of life.

So, the secret to spending less? You gain MORE!

So many of us often wonder how to eat enough protein to benefit our bodies functioning, especially if you are eating a plant based diet. Sure, its fairly easy to get in the carbs and veg (sometimes!) but we often struggle with getting enough protein. We wanted to share a wide range of protein sources you can choose from to incorporate into your diet, both animal and plant based.

Protein is a macronutrient and our bodies require a lot of it to function optimally. It makes up our body structure including muscle, skin, organs, hair and nails. Protein helps create enzymes that regulate our metabolism, hormone production, antibodies, neurotransmitters, and assists with the growth and repair of cells.

There are many benefits of protein, as you could imagine. Proteins play a large role in muscular health. They are present in the muscle filaments and provide structure to the muscles, while helping with general repair. Proteins are also vital for a healthy immune and nervous system. We need protein sources to ensure we get enough energy and to prevent our bodies from using muscle stores to keep us running! On the outside, protein helps us to have strong and shiny hair, nails and skin.

So how much protein do we as females actually need? We need 0.75g for every kilo of weight, compared to 0.84g in men. For those expecting mama’s, 1g/kg of protein is needed to support both mum and bub. For example, a female who is 60kg, 45g of protein is needed daily!

The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend for women to have 2.5 serves of protein a day. Luckily there are a wide range of both plant and animal based proteins. Be sure to get a balance of BOTH types of protein to really benefit your body! Let the list begin…

Plant Based Protein Sources

Vegans, vegetarians and those who eat both meat and plants have a wide range of plant based proteins to choose from which are just as good as eating meat to some confusion!

Organic Tofu/tempeh

Edamame

Lentils

Chickpeas

Nuts and nut butters (almonds, cashews, peanuts, brazil nuts)

Seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, flax)

Spirulina

Quinoa

Chia seeds

Hemp seeds

Protein rich vegetables (dark leafy vegetables, mushrooms, broccoli)

Ezekiel bread

Nutritional yeast

Protein powders (pea, brown rice, hemp, pumpkin)

Animal

Animal protein sources are readily available and don’t include just meat but other high quality dairy products and eggs as well..

Free Range Organic Eggs

Organic Full Cream milk

Natural Pot Set Yoghurt

Goats Cheese

Wild Caught Fish and Seafood

Free Range Chicken

Free Range Turkey

Organic Pork

Lean grass fed beef

Organic Lamb

Organic Whey Protein

So there you have it, including enough protein in your diet can be hard but knowing you can choose from a variety of plant and animal based protein sources makes it a bit easier! Why don’t you take a peek at this recipe…

Recently I read an interesting book all about the Danish way of living, Hygge. This sparked something inside of me and a desire to share the concept with who ever would listen. Claudia also eager to learn more about Hygge and how you could incorporate this way of living into your everyday life suggested it be the topic of the week!!

Hygge is a bit tricky to define but to sum up its the feeling of cosiness, the absence of annoyance and taking pleasure from soothing things. Seriously who wouldn’t want to live their lives by these values? It is more about an atmosphere and an experience rather than about things. Being surrounded by the people you love, a feeling of home and safety is what it’s about.

Did you know Danes are one of the happiest countries in the world?! And it all comes down to this ingredient, hygge. The original word in Norwegian means ‘well-being’ but some think it may originate from the word ‘hug’, which makes sense because feeling ‘hygge’  feels like a warming giant hug!

While hygge can often be an abstract concept, we can use our senses to really breathe it in.. Hygge has a taste, a sound, a smell and a texture.

The taste of hygge is always familiar, sweet and comforting. Think warm cups of chai with honey, velvety dark chocolate, a comforting bowl of maple spiced porridge..

Hygge mainly has to do with the absence of sounds, allowing you to focus and be mindful of the small sounds. Rain on the rooftop, wind blowing through leaves. Any sound in a safe place is hygge..

Smell is a powerful memory provoking sense. Have you ever smelt something that takes you back to a time in your life? A common theme of smells of hygge is that they all bring us back to a time in our life where we felt safe. A favourite perfume, the smell of freshly baked bread, the scent of the ocean..

Hygge feels like a cosy, chunky knit jumper, a warm ceramic cup, a smooth wooden surface, a soft, fluffy blanket, even the feel of your pet!

But most importantly hygge is about feeling safe. Feeling loved, connected and trusting the people around you.

Hygge Emergency Kit

Soft lighting- Think lightly fragranced candles, tea lights, fairy lights, lanterns and crystal lamps. Soft, warm lighting is the way to go!

Chocolate- There are so many decadent brands of healthy chocolate so why not pop over to your grocer and have a browse. Make a deal with yourself that you can have a square a day as an evening ritual.

Tea- Like chocolate there are SO many tea’s to choose from. My go to is earl grey, chai or lemon and ginger.

Your favourite book- It doesn’t have to be wordy or intellectual (but if you like that then go for it!) something that evokes memories and takes you to another world.

Your favourite movie or TV show- in the days of binge watching Netflix we often race to see what we can watch next. Next time you watch a TV show or movie, slow down and really take it in.

A good pair of cosy socks- Cold feet are uncomfortable so treat yourself to a silly pair of socks that will keep your feet warm!

Journal- Journalling is very therapeutic. Writing down what your day held for you can be such a release for your busy mind.

A nice blanket- Find yourself a fluffy, cosy blanket to rug up in!

Music- Find a peaceful playlist that soothes you and listen to it with mindful ears.

A photo album- Something that you can hold in your hands preferably. How good does it feel to re visit those funny, photos filled with such happiness and joy from your childhood?! Paired with a hot mug of tea this makes for a hygge evening!

So there you have it, as the days get cooler now is a great time to put together your Hygge emergency kit!

Why not have a look at these ways to be mindful to create more hygge moments in your day!

Its that time of year when its a little hard to get out of bed in the mornings, when the puffer jackets and woolly jumpers come out and we start craving wholesome nourishing foods. Nothing says winter breakfast more than porridge. This is a spin on the classic porridge that can get a bit tiresome. These comforting cacao, banana & PB baked oats really hit the spot on those chilly winter mornings and make for a really nourishing and nutritious breakfast as well.

The combination of cacao, banana & PB make this breakfast taste like an indulgent dessert. Oats are a low GI carbohydrate and keeps you feeling full for longer, stabilises blood sugar and contains a good amount of fibre and protein. Banana’s are loaded with potassium, great for heart health. Cinnamon has blood sugar stabilising properties and is anti-inflammatory. Now chocolate solves a LOT of problems but it is even better its raw form, cacao powder is full of antioxidants, magnesium and iron. The chia seeds offer a protein hit, as does the peanut butter, keeping you full for longer and helping with muscle repair and replenishment. So enjoy this comforting bowl of oats to nourish without guilt!

Comforting Cacao, Banana & PB Baked Oats

Serves 1:

1/2 cup wholegrain oats

1/2 cup almond milk or milk of choice

1/2 banana, mashed

2 tsp cacao powder

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tbsp chia seeds

Toppings

1/2 banana, sliced

1 tbsp peanut butter

Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius.

In an oven-proof bowl, mix together the oats, almond milk, mashed banana, cacao powder, cinnamon, baking powder and chia seeds until well combined.

Place in oven and bake for 30 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean.

Let oats cool for 5-10 minutes

Top with banana slices and a dollop of peanut butter!

Enjoy while warm with a nice cup of tea!
